700,000 people commit suicide every year, not counting the many attempted suicides worldwide, according to a World Health Organization (WHO) report.

“The scourge is so imminent in the country right now due to the difficult economic challenges facing the country,” according to some Nigerians.

“Men commit suicide partly because they have no work to put food on the table, and partly because marital problems can also contribute, if one ventures into an illegal marital relationship,” explains Bassey Emmanuel, a civil servant.

“The pressure some women put on their husbands leads them to die earlier. If you look at the number of years men have been on earth, you’ll find that some men die at the age of 60 while their wives stay until 90 or 100, and if you check, the gap is too big,” says Chidi Emmanuel, driver.

Experts describe suicide as a serious new public health problem, with more far-reaching consequences.

“The main thought of depressed people is lack of love,” according to a mental health counselor, Dennis Agbeti.

“The first is a feeling of hopelessness, you know the saying where there is life, there is hope, but the reality is that where there is no hope, there can be life. The lack of hope can lead to depression and cause someone to think about suicide,” he added.

November 19 is International Men’s Day, a worldwide celebration of the positive value that people bring to the world, their families and their communities.

On this occasion, a plea was launched for zero male suicide.
