Covid-19: Delta variant spreads in China, Beijing affected

The Delta variant of the covid-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc in the world. The latest covid-19 variant is now spreading to several provinces in China, including Beijing, authorities said on Thursday.

The Delta strain is said to be more contagious.

China, where Covid-19 was first detected at the end of 2019, practically contained the epidemic in the spring of 2020.

But the latest outbreak, spotted in Nanjing on July 20, is now the most widespread geographically in the country for months.

The majority of those infected had already been vaccinated, according to authorities in Jiangsu, raising concerns about the effectiveness of Chinese vaccines against the Delta strain. The most populous country in the world has already administered 1.6 billion doses (only “made in China”) but without specifying how many inhabitants were fully vaccinated.
