Senegal’s opponent Faye at the top of early presidential election results

The anti-system opponent Bassirou Diomaye Faye, still in prison ten days ago, seems to have taken the lead in the presidential election in Senegal, but the power camp has assured that there will be a second round.

After three years of agitation and crisis, Senegalese are still waiting to know the outcome of an election which will decide between continuity and perhaps radical change. They remain uncertain about the need for a second round, for which no date has been set.

According to local reports, Bassirou Diomaye Faye won the elections with 56% of the vote while his rival Amadou Ba obtained 31%.

Official results of the presidential election held on Sunday should not be known until later this week. The national electoral commission has until Friday to publish provisional results, before their validation by the Constitutional Council.

For his part, Amadou Ba, the candidate supported by the power, said he was certain that there would be a second round.
