At least four people were killed and several others injured in a stampede during a food distribution in a community in Bauchi state, north-east Nigeria.
“The stampede occurred as many people waited to receive food aid distributed in private enterprise, resulting in the deaths of four people,” according to Ahmed Wakil, spokesman for the Bauchi state police.
“The incident occurred as hundreds of women and young people jostled to receive their share of food distributed by a local aid group,” a witness to the scene said.
The incident occurred just two days after students were injured in a stampede during an aid distribution at a university in the north-central state of Nasarawa.
“Nigeria is facing a food crisis and economic difficulties, with inflation reaching a record 31.7% in February,” according to a report.
