The US concerned about drug trafficking in Guinea-Bissau

US Ambassador Michael Raynor expressed US concern over drug trafficking, human trafficking and respect for the values of democracy, including the freedoms of citizens in Guinea-Bissau.

Recently, there have been reports of heavy drug circulation in Guinea-Bissau. Former Guinean Prime Minister Nuno Nabiam himself denounced it, but the Bissau authorities have always denied it. In June 2023, the United States of America published a report in which it placed Guinea-Bissau on the list of countries taking the least measures to combat human trafficking in the world. At the time, Guinean President Umaro Sissoco Embaló denied Washington’s allegations and said the country was not a trafficker in “anything.”

Regarding respect for democratic values, the American ambassador said he had insisted on the Minister of the Interior and Public Order to guarantee the freedoms of citizens. The opposition and civil society organizations have denounced the fact that the authorities in power are reducing the freedoms of citizens, which the United States does not want to see continue in Guinea-Bissau.

In a statement released on social media by the Presidency of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló and the United States Ambassador to Guinea-Bissau, Michael A. Raynor, also discussed issues related to the role of government in Guinea-Bissau. Raynor, also addressed issues related to strengthening cooperation between the two countries, with emphasis on confirming the reopening of the United States Embassy in the country.
