Ghana Finance Ministry advises President Akufo-Addo not to sign anti-LGBTQ+ bill

Ghana’s Finance Ministry has recommended that President Nana Akufo-Addo not sign a controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill passed by Parliament last week.

The ministry advises the president not to sign the bill until the country’s Supreme Court rules on whether it complies with Ghana’s constitution. It said signing the bill could cause the country to lose nearly $3.8 billion in World Bank funding over the next five years.

Several countries including the UK and the US have condemned the bill, while rights groups have described it as regressive.

Ghana is under a three-year IMF bailout support programme, and there are concerns that any shortfall in funding from the World Bank and other donors could derail the economic recovery.
