Ghana parliament passes anti-LGBTQ+ bill

Ghana’s lawmakers have passed a tough new bill that imposes a prison sentence on anyone found guilty of identifying as LGBTQ+ and anyone found guilty of creating or funding LGBTQ+ groups.

The parliamentarians have cracked down on attempts to replace prison sentences with community service and counseling.

The bill, which received support from Ghana’s two main political parties, will only come into force if President Nana Akufo-Addo signs it.

He had previously said he would do so if the majority of Ghanaians wanted it.

Homosexual relations are already prohibited by law in Ghana: they are punishable by a three-year prison sentence.
