Six-day strike against fuel price hikes in Chad

Chadian trade unions have called a six-day strike, starting this Tuesday February 20, 2024, in protest against rising fuel prices, according to reports.

“Following the announcement of a 40% increase in the price of gasoline, now reaching 730 CFA francs per liter, and an 18% increase for diesel, to 828 CFA francs per liter (…) workers representatives voted in favor of a six-day strike”, reports stated.

“This mobilization is intended to denounce not only the significant increase in fuel prices, but also the way in which it was announced just after the conclusion of discussions with the government”, reports added.

The Chadian Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Finance had annonced the increase in the price of petroleum products: gasoline, diesel and Jet A, specifying that the open-air sale of these products is prohibited.

With this latest increase, the Chadian government is exacerbating the crisis of high living costs already afflicting the Chadian population.
