At least 2,056 minors have been victims of sexual violence within the Spanish Catholic Church, according to the Spanish Bishops Conference (CEE).
It all goes back to February 2022, when the Spanish Church commissioned the law firm Cremades & Calvo-Sotelo to carry out an audit into child abuse within the Church.
This report, which sheds light on sexual violence committed by both clergy and lay people working for religious institutions, could be published in its entirety.
Unlike France, Portugal, Belgium and most other Western Catholic hierarchies, where the Church has acknowledged its responsibility and apologized to the victims, the Spanish episcopate continues to play down this silent scourge.
