Two candidates killed on the eve of the election

Two candidates for the legislative elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo were shot dead in South and North Kivu, just a few days before the general elections.

Sadiki Espoir Ndabuye and Joseph Kasongo Tshomba, legislative candidates were killed just a few days before the general elections scheduled for December 20.

On Friday, December 15, 2023, Kasongo Tshomba Joseph, candidate number 312, was ambushed by unidentified armed men on the Beni-Kasindi axis of national road number 4, according to reports.

The candidate, who was riddled with bullets, was rushed to Beni ville general hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Sadiki Espoir Ndabuye was also killed on Friday December 15 at around 7.30pm at the entrance to the Uvira general referral hospital in Kakungwe. According to witnesses, the perpetrators were unidentified armed men.

The authorities have yet to comment on this incident, which comes just a few days before the polls are due to be called, while the Congolese armed forces have announced that they have taken appropriate measures to secure the electoral process.
