Italian fugitive linked to Calabrian mafia arrested in Colombia

A 55-year-old Italian fugitive, suspected of being linked to the Calabrian ‘Ndrangheta mafia and wanted for major cocaine trafficking between South America and Europe, was arrested in Colombia, Interpol announced this Thursday 1st December.

Massimo Gigliotti was the subject of a red notice, an international wanted notice issued by the international criminal police organization at the request of Italy, one of its member countries, specifies in a press release the institution whose headquarters world is in Lyon.

The suspect was arrested by the Colombian national police, “after agents of the operational investigation department of the carabinieri (editor’s note: Italian gendarmes) of Bologna analyzed and disseminated information” from the European police office Europol.

The latter then collaborated with the units of the Interpol I-CAN program (Interpol Cooperation against the ‘Ndrangheta) in Lyon, with the support of an Italian officer in Colombia.

“The investigation into the suspect accelerated in South America after the I-CAN Project reported the fugitive last September to authorities in Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Panama and Venezuela,” indicates Interpol.

Since its launch in 2020, I-CAN has facilitated the arrest of 93 fugitives around the world, according to the international organization, which has 195 member countries to date and around 800 employees in Lyon and is celebrating its centenary this year.
