Coup d’état in Niger: EU against military solution

European Union foreign ministers ruled out a military solution as they met to discuss the political situation in Niger.

As tensions between the putschists in Niger and Ecowas escalate, the European Union reiterates its support for the decisions taken by the sub-regional organization.

For the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borell, a military solution to the crisis in Niger is not the priority.

“We have expressed our full support for ECOWAS’s efforts to put maximum pressure on the Niger junta. We prefer a diplomatic solution, no one wants military intervention”, said Josep Borrell.

The Europeans have also decided to suspend budgetary aid to Niger.

Targeted sanctions were also imposed on the Niger putschists.
