At least seven dead in Corinthians fan bus crash in Brazil

A bus carrying Corinthians fans overturned early Sunday in a winding descent from a highway near Belo Horizonte, in the state of Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil, leaving seven dead and several injured.

“There were seven dead and 27 people were taken to hospitals in the region,” Minas Gerais state firefighter Lt. Fernando Frois told reporters. The National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) said the bus was not up to standard.

“It had no registration or authorization necessary to transport passengers between States”, detailed the ANTT in a press release. According to testimonies from passengers collected by the G1 news site, the driver shouted that he had no brakes shortly before losing control of the bus.

The main Brazilian clubs as well as the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and the president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, sent their condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.
