Algerian president announced in France next June

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune will travel to France next June as part of a state visit, the Algerian presidency announced on Sunday, after a telephone conversation between the two heads of state.

During this meeting, the two presidents “discussed bilateral relations and the means of strengthening them, including the state visit of the President of the Republic to France, which they agreed to organize in the second half of the month. June,” the presidency said in a statement. This visit was initially expected in May.

Emmanuel Macron, for his part, went to Algeria in August 2022 for an official three-day visit.

The announcement of this new date comes a month after Paris and Algiers officially turned the page on the latest diplomatic crisis between the two countries.

The two presidents had exchanged by telephone at the end of March, clearing up during this interview the “misunderstandings” linked to the estrangement around a Franco-Algerian activist and agreeing to strengthen the communication channels (…) to avoid that renews this type of regrettable misunderstandings, according to the Elysée which had affirmed that it wanted to continue to “strengthen cooperation between Paris and Algiers with very tumultuous relations.”

The two countries are stepping up their efforts to rebuild a more peaceful relationship. The commission of French and Algerian historians created to work on French colonization and the war in Algeria held a first meeting on 19 April.
