US Senate passes law protecting same-sex marriage

The US Senate voted on Tuesday (61 for, 36 against) the “Respect for Marriage Act”, a law protecting same-sex marriage.

The “Respect for Marriage Act” will assure every married couple the validity of their marriage in any state in the United States, as long as the marriage is valid in the state where it was solemnized, the Washington Post explains.

The text must now go through the House of Representatives for a final vote, before its promulgation by Democratic President Joe Biden.

In the United States, same-sex unions have been guaranteed by the Supreme Court since 2015.

“The United States is about to reaffirm a fundamental truth: love is love and Americans should be able to marry the person they love,” President Joe Biden said in a statement.
