Kenya catches up after William Ruto’s controversial tweet

The Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a note of clarification after President-elect William Ruto tweeted about Kenya’s position on the recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).

The Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ note aims to reassure Kenya’s partners, the UN and the African Union in the lead.

Kenya says it is “fully aligned” with the 1982 AU resolution and the AU charter, which provides for “the inalienable right of peoples to self-determination”.

Nairobi specified its commitment to the 1991 Security Council resolution that calls for “self-determination” of Western Sahara “through a referendum.”

The Kenyan ministry clarified that Nairobi “does not conduct its foreign policy on Twitter” but rather “through official documents”.
