Nigeria: arrest of suspected billionaire drug lord

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria has arrested Chief Afam Ukatu, a suspected drug dealer, described as a billionaire drug baron, while onboard a plane at Lagos airport, local media reported.

In a statement, the agency said investigations had identified Mr Ukatu as a major importer of large consignments of Tramadol, an opioid painkiller that the agency termed illicit.

Mr Ukatu is said to own pharmaceutical and plastic manufacturing companies that “he used as a cover to import illicit drugs into Nigeria”.

The arrest was made on 13 April but announced on Monday.

It’s unclear whether he has responded to the accusations or where he’s being held.
