US, ECOWAS and AU condemn coup d’Etat in Guinea

Through statements, the head of the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the US State Department have condemned the Coup d’Etat in Guinea.

The head of African Union Felix Tshisekedi and the AU Commission Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat called on the African Union Peace and Security Council to meet urgently to examine the new situation in Guinea and take action appropriate to the circumstances.

ECOWAS demands respect for the physical integrity of President Alpha Conde and his immediate and unconditional release, asks the defense and security forces to remain in a republican posture and demands the return to constitutional order under penalty of sanction.

The US State Department said that “violence and any extra-constitutional measures will only erode Guinea’s prospects for peace, stability, and prosperity”.
