In addition to pollution, Beijing the Chinese capital is currently being hit hard by a violent sandstorm. The combination of the two phenomena produces a cocktail that is dangerous for health and reduces visibility to a few hundred meters.
The whole capital is enveloped in a yellowish cloud.
Sandstorms from the nearby Gobi Desert are common in the spring in northern China, but Beijingers have not seen such heavy skies in years.

The Beijing municipality, which has a population of more than 20 million, has suspended all outdoor sports activities in schools and advised people with respiratory problems not to leave their homes.
