The Beninese opposition rejets the sponsorship “lock”

Will the presidential elections in Benin be like the non-inclusive legislatives of 2019? Many observers believe that the condition of sponsorship imposed by the government implies that the competition is not completely open.

Indeed, only the ruling majority is able to gather the sponsorships today for the presidential election of April 11, 2021.

Appeals ask the Constitutional Court to declare inapplicable the requirement of sponsorship for any candidate for the presidential election. As response, the constitutional court declared itself incompetent, explaining that it cannot replace the deputies representing the people.

For the opposition, this Parliament resulting from the non-inclusive legislative elections of 2019 does not represent all the people.
