Although erotic and pornographic content was already circulating on the social network X (formerly Twitter), it’s now official since Monday June 3.
Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, on the other hand, have implemented heavy restrictions on such content.
Since Elon Musk acquired Twitter in 2022, he first changed the name to “X”, making the social network a space for free expression, even if it meant reducing content moderation.
“We believe that users should be able to create, broadcast and view sexual content as long as it is consensually produced and distributed,” the network states on the “adult content” page of its updated rules.
The X platform nonetheless assures that it “prevents such content from being viewed by children or by adult users who do not wish to be exposed to it”, and prohibits content promoting “(sexual) exploitation, harm to minors and obscene behavior”.
Several organizations, including the Center Against Online Hate (CCHR), have accused the platform of allowing hate messages or images.
