Kenya opens its borders to African citizens

Kenya has announced a reform aimed at boosting tourism, promoting regional integration and encouraging trade between African countries.

Following in Ghana’s footsteps, Kenya now allows almost all Africans to enter its territory without prior authorization, according to a recent government decision.

An Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) was in force for all foreign visitors, including Africans. Although this measure was presented as a simplification, it had been described as a visa in disguise.

Nationals of all African countries, with the exception of Somalia and Libya for security reasons, will now be able to stay in Kenya for up to two months without additional formalities.

Members of the East African Community (EAC), including Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi, enjoy an additional privilege, with a stay of up to six months.
