Nearly 200 people arrested in West Africa

In an operation targeting illegal gold mining in Burkina Faso, Gambia, Guinea and Senegal, nearly 200 arrests were made and dangerous chemicals, explosives and drugs were seized.

Interpol, which coordinated the West African police operation dubbed Sanu, made the announcement on Tuesday. The UK Home Office was also involved in the operation.

The initiative uncovered the vast networks behind this illicit activity.

At least 150 kilograms of cyanide, 325 kilograms of activated carbon and explosive devices were confiscated.

The use of harmful chemicals by these illegal miners has adverse effects not only on the environment, but also on the health of local residents.

This is the first time that West African police have tackled illegal sand mining in The Gambia. Sand mining has become an increasingly serious threat, wreaking havoc on local ecosystems and livelihoods.
