Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko was in Mauritania for a three-day visit that ended on Tuesday, January 14 as he announced the creation of a committee to complete the Rosso bridge linking the two countries by 2026.

“This visit is part of the strengthening of exemplary bilateral relations between Senegal and Mauritania,” says Dakar, as the two countries jointly exploit the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas field.

As a reminder, Senegalese head of state Bassirou Diomaye Faye chose his large Mauritanian neighbor for his first official foreign visit just after his election in March 2024.

Senegal and Mauritania are linked by a number of major issues, notably energy, with the joint gas exploitation project (GTA) off Saint-Louis, the construction of the Rosso bridge to boost trade between the two countries, and migration issues.

At the end of this State visit, an office dedicated to cooperation between the two countries will be set up to monitor the various agreements concluded between the two countries.
