On January 11, 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Benin provides details of the helicopter crash that occurred on the afternoon of January 10 in the commune of Zè, some 50 kilometers from Cotonou.
According to reports, it was a forced landing due to partial mechanical failure of the aircraft. There were no fatalities or injuries.
According to the U.S. diplomatic representation in Benin, the aircraft was a civilian helicopter chartered by the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).
The embassy reports that the helicopter was supporting the Beninese army in medical evacuations.
Lokonon Michel, a local councillor who visited the crash site, explained that he and the local population went to the scene to help the occupants get out of the aircraft.
“There were only white people on board the helicopter, and it spoke English,” he said.
