DRC: FAO sounds alarm over persisting high levels of hunger

The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) is sounding the alarm on the situation of food insecurity in the DRC, estimating that it needs 330 million dollars to deal with it.

Nearly a quarter of the Congolese population, or just over 25 million people, suffer from hunger. Three million of the 25 million are in a humanitarian emergency.

To respond to this crisis, “we need to focus on creating a peaceful environment in the eastern part of the country. We know that conflicts in this region are the cause of population displacement. There are acute food problems in the IDP camps. Peace is the primary factor in changing this situation. But the problem of funding is rarely highlighted,” said the organization’s Deputy Managing Director, Beth Bechdol.

“The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is classified as a country at high risk of famine,” according to the organization.
