Sudan: 253 new cases of cholera confirmed

The cholera epidemic continues to spread in Sudan, with 253 new cases confirmed and over 42,000 cases in total, including 1,180 deaths reported since last August.

The Sudanese Ministry of Health said that 253 new cases of cholera have been reported, bringing the total number of contaminations to 42,725 and 1,180 deaths.

The Ministry of Health deplores one death among the 253 people newly affected by cholera.

On August 12, the Sudanese authorities declared cholera an epidemic in the country.

With regard to dengue fever, the Sudanese Ministry reported a drop in the number of dengue fever infections in a number of states.

It added that 15 new cases of dengue fever had been recorded, with no new deaths, bringing the total number of infections to 7,250, while 15 people had died from the tropical flu.

On September 19, the Sudanese health authorities announced that they had detected 232 suspected cases of dengue fever, including two deaths.

This year’s health catastrophe coincided with the suffering caused by the war that has pitted the regular Sudanese army against the Rapid Support Forces since mid-April 2023.

According to the United Nations, this war has left some 18,800 people dead and almost 10 million displaced and as refugees.

The international community and the United Nations are stepping up their appeals to spare Sudan from a humanitarian catastrophe that has begun to push millions of people towards starvation and death due to food shortages, resulting from fighting that has spread to 13 states out of a total of 18.
