The government of Burkina Faso has acquired a fleet of electric vehicles, in a move aimed at reducing the state’s cost of living and preserving the environment.
The vehicles, donated by Li Yubao, Chairman and CEO of Yunhong International Group, were officially handed over to the Minister of Economy and Finance, Aboubakar Nacanabo.
Valued at over a billion FCFA, the vehicles, which have a range of 500 kilometers, should help limit greenhouse gas emissions while reducing fuel and maintenance costs, according to the donor.
This initiative is in response to commitments made last March by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who had expressed his intention to equip members of the government with electric vehicles.
According to Captain Martha Céleste Anderson Dekomwin Medah, Chief of Staff to the Head of State, the decision also aims to improve air quality in urban areas.
A partnership has been set up with a start-up company to create a manufacturing unit for electric vehicles on national territory.
The first models to be assembled entirely in the country should be available in the first quarter of 2025.
This initiative marks an important step in Burkina Faso’s sustainable development strategy, and demonstrates the government’s commitment to energy transition.
