Reintroduction of the death penalty in Burkina faso

In Burkina Faso, while the death penalty was abolished in 2018, the ruling military regime is considering reinstating it in the Penal Code.

This possible reintroduction was confirmed by the Minister of Justice, Rodrigue Bayala, who specified that the proposal would be submitted to the Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT), a body appointed by the junta.

According to Minister Bayala, this decision reflects the vision of the government led by Captain Ibrahim Traore, in power since September 2022.

He indicated that the amendments to the Penal Code would be in line with the instructions given by the Head of State in connection with overall security and governance reforms.

Amnesty International has noted an increase in death sentences in sub-Saharan Africa, where executions tripled in 2023.

Since the last execution in Burkina Faso in 1988, the region has tended to gradually abandon capital punishment.

By 2023, 24 African countries had abolished it altogether, while some, such as Kenya and Zimbabwe, are considering similar reforms.
