9.7 million Tunisian voters were called to the polls on Sunday October 6 to elect their president from the three candidates in the running, according to reports.
Incumbent President Kaïs Saïed faces two challengers, Zouhaïr Maghzaoui, a former member of parliament who headed an Arab nationalist party, and Ayachi Zammel, a businessman currently in prison for allegedly forging sponsorships.
Turnout is expected to be low at 27.7%, compared with 45% in 2019.
Pending the official results to be announced by the Isie, a poll broadcast on national television on Sunday evening gave Kais Saïed the winner by more than 89%.
Isie president Farouk Bouasker called the turnout respectable, despite the fact that it was the lowest turnout for a first round of presidential elections since the advent of democracy in 2011 in the country that was the cradle of the Arab Spring.
