Senegal: Death of first African Director-General of UNESCO

The former Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Senegalese Amadou Mahtar Mbow, died on Monday night at the age of 103 in Dakar, Senegal.

Amadou Mahtar Mbow headed UNESCO for thirteen years, from 1974 to 1987. He is the first African to hold this position.

“From New York for the United Nations General Assembly, it is with deep emotion that I learn of the death of Professor Amadou Mahtar Mbow, former Director General of UNESCO and a great defender of multilateralism”, reacted Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on X on Tuesday.

He continued: “One of the patriarchs of the Senegalese nation has passed away, leaving an invaluable legacy, marked by his fight for global educational and cultural justice”.

An academic and politician, Amadou Mahtar Mbow was Minister of Education, then of Culture, between 1966 and 1970, and in June 2008 chaired the Assises nationales du Sénégal and the Commission nationale de réformes des institutions (CNRI).
