Five hundred and two people have been killed and one million seven hundred others affected by the floods in Chad, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The OCHA Chad indicated that 212,000 houses had been destroyed, 375,000 hectares of fields and 69,000 head of cattle devastated by the waters.
117 of Chad’s 124 departments have been affected by flooding, reports stated.
Since the beginning of June, coinciding with the start of the rainy season, several African countries have been experiencing heavy rainfall leading to flooding.
In addition to the loss of human life, these floods have caused considerable material damage. This was the case in Niger, where flooding on September 20 resulted in 322 deaths and several injuries.
More than a million people were affected, and numerous roads, schools and fields were damaged by the waters.
The government had to postpone the start of the new school year, initially scheduled for October 02, to the 28th of the same month, explaining that some schools had been damaged while others were occupied by flood victims.
