In the DRC, 1,685 Malaka prisoners were released as they were seriously ill on September 22, 2024 in Kinshasa, according to reports.
The release of the prisionners is part of a program to reduce prison overcrowding.
The most serious cases received immediate medical attention, signed directly by Minister Constant Mutamba.
The latter was very firm, denouncing the negligent management of patients in detention and ordering the disinfection of prison wards and a resupply of medicines.
Fifteen thousand inmates live in this establishment, ten times more than the penitentiary’s original capacity.
Prison conditions are disastrous. The death of almost 150 prisoners earlier this month, in what the authorities presented as an escape attempt, put the prison in the spotlight once again.
