In Kenya, from January to September 16, 2024, 3,369 people lost their lives in road accidents, compared with 3,151 in the first nine months of 2023.
National Police Service (NPS) data reveal that these casualties included 1,281 pedestrians, 825 motorcyclists, 654 passengers and 281 drivers. This period also saw 16,979 injuries.
In 2023, the number of deaths due to road accidents in Kenya was 3,999, compared with 4,690 in 2022.
According to the Ministry of Transport, “around 3,500 people die every year on the country’s roads.”
The WHO reports that between 2010 and 2021, Africa saw a 17% increase in fatal road accidents, while the global rate fell by 5%.
By 2021, nearly 250,000 people had lost their lives in road accidents across the continent.
According to a recent report by the World Health Organization, Africa accounts for almost 20% of global road accident deaths, despite having only 15% of the world’s population and 3% of the world’s vehicles.
