Sudan: cholera death toll rises to 235

The death toll from the cholera epidemic in Sudan has risen to 235, announced the Sudanese Ministry of Health.

“361 new cases of cholera had been recorded, including 7 deaths in the states of Kassala, Al Gaddarif (east) and Nile (north),” the ministry said.

“This brings the number of cholera cases to 6,618, including 235 deaths in 8 states,” statement added.

The Sudanese Ministry of Health announced that 185 people had died as a result of the cholera epidemic.

On August 12, the Sudanese authorities declared cholera an epidemic in the country.

This year’s health catastrophe coincided with the suffering caused by the war that has pitted the regular Sudanese army against the Rapid Support Forces since mid-April 2023.

According to the United Nations, this war has left some 18,800 people dead and almost 10 million displaced and as refugees.

The international community and the United Nations are stepping up their appeals to spare Sudan from a humanitarian catastrophe that has begun to push millions of people towards starvation and death due to food shortages, as a result of fighting that has spread to 13 states.
