Two Chinese have been apprehended for illegally mining gold in Nigeria, the Nigerian Minister responsible for Solid Minerals, Dele Aleke, shared this information on X.
“We have charged alleged illegal miners recently arrested in Kogi and Ondo states. These include two Chinese nationals and a Nigerian in Kogi, as well as four suspects arrested illegally mining gold in the Ogunlepa Forest Reserve in Ondo. All have been charged before the Federal High Court in Abuja”, wrote the Minister.
The Nigerian government wants to clean up the mining sector in order to boost its economy. To combat illegal mining, the Nigerian authorities are using modern technologies.
“A key element of my commitment to eliminating illegal mining is to improve the operations of our mining officers through technology and satellite surveillance.”
“I urge anyone involved in illegal mining to comply with the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act (NNMA) and regularize their operations.”
“Our determination to take decisive action against illegal activities is unwavering, and we will maintain zero tolerance for any form of illegality,” added Minister Dele Aleke.
