New bus crash in South Africa leaves at least five dead and several injured

A bus from Zimbabwe has overturned in Limpopo province in northeastern South Africa, killing at least five people, local authorities said Sunday, September 1, after a deadly week that left dozens dead on the road.

“The province’s Department of Transport is sad to announce a second deadly bus accident in less than five days,” according to a statement.

Fatigue may have been a cause of this accident,” authorities said.

“Many passengers were injured to varying degrees and have been hospitalized,” the department added.

Earlier this week, another bus from Zimbabwe overturned in Limpopo province. The toll: 10 dead and 35 injured. And on Saturday, at least 11 people were killed in a head-on collision in KwaZulu-Natal province in eastern South Africa.

Also on Saturday in the same province, at least six supporters of the opposition uMkhonto Wesizwe party died when the driver of their minibus lost control.

The Limpopo Department of Transport has “called on bus companies to ensure their drivers are fit for duty'”.
