Namibia to donate 83 elephants, 30 hippos, 300 zebras as meat to drought victims

Namibia’s Ministry of Environment plans to cull 723 animals, including 83 elephants, 30 hippos, 60 buffalo, 50 impalas, 100 blue wildebeest, 300 zebras and 100 eland, Reuters news agency reports.

The goal? To provide meat to its population facing a food shortage linked to a major drought. Southern Africa is indeed facing its worst drought in decades.

A drought, caused by the El Niño phenomenon and rising temperatures linked to climate change, which has wiped out harvests throughout this region in the southwest of the African continent.

Namibia exhausted 84% of its food reserves last month, according to the United Nations, and 68 million people are suffering from it. Nearly half of the Namibian population is expected to experience severe food insecurity in the coming months, Africa News points out.
