Sudan: cholera epidemic claims 27 lives

Sudan is facing a cholera epidemic that has so far claimed 27 lives out of a total of 556 confirmed cases, Sudanese Health Minister Haitham Ibrahim announced.

The states of Kassala and Gedaref are particularly hard hit, said the minister.

Before the war, the UN had already warned of the plight of the country’s 48 million inhabitants: 4 out of 10 had no access to drinking water, reports stated, pointing out that Sudan had also been hit for several weeks by torrential rains, displacing thousands of people and bringing their share of disease.

It is these rains and the flooding they cause that have brought cholera back with a vengeance in a country where the World Health Organization (WHO) has counted “11,327 cases, including 316 deaths” since June 2023, reports said.
