A mosque under construction in the vicinity of Winner’s Chapel Church collapsed, causing extensive damage in the Cocody Akouédo district of Abidjan, the Ivorian capital.
The country has recently been the scene of a series of tragic events. After a season of collapsing buildings, this was followed by episodes of suicides and dramatic accidents.
On the evening of Thursday August 15, 2024, the country was once again rocked by a new misfortune.
The emergency services, notably the military fire department (GSPM), were quickly mobilized to rescue the victims.
The provisional death toll is at least seven, while the seriously injured were rushed to the Angré University Hospital (CHU).
Rescue operations are continuing, with searches underway for any victims still under the rubble.
According to reports, the victims are mainly workers and Muslim worshippers.
For the time being, the causes of this tragedy, which has once again plunged Abidjan into mourning, remain unknown.
