Mali: Dozens killed in new mining accident

Dozens of gold miners trapped in Nigeria’s Niger State

Dozens of gold miners are trapped underground after a mine collapsed in central Nigeria’s Niger state, local media reported.

The incident happened on Monday after heavy rainfall in Niger state but news was slow to emerge because of the country’s general strike, which was called off on Tuesday.

Niger State emergency services spokesperson, Hussaini Ibrahim, was quoted by the BBC as saying that one person has been confirmed dead and that they believe more than 30 people are still trapped as Relief efforts continue.

Officials believe the collapse was caused by the torrential rains which softened the soil.
