An American citizen was found guilty of the femicide in 2023 of a locally renowned Colombian DJ, whose body was found in a trash can in the capital, Bogota.
He was sentenced this Tuesday, June 4, to more than 42 years in prison.
“A prosecutor (…) demonstrated during the proceedings that the foreign citizen had taken the young woman to an apartment located in the north of the city and that, in a fit of jealousy, he had beaten and suffocated her” , indicated the prosecution in a press release.
More than 600 feminicides in 2022
Security camera footage, broadcast by national media outlets, showed John Nelson Poulos leaving his rental apartment, pushing a shopping cart with a large suitcase inside visibly containing the young woman’s body, then putting the suitcase in the trunk of his car.
The case had aroused strong emotion in the country of 50 million inhabitants where, according to the Colombian Observatory of Feminicides, a non-governmental organization, 612 feminicides were recorded in 2022. The judicial authority counts 100 on the same period.
