UN “very concerned” by Joe Biden’s immigration policy

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Tuesday it was “very concerned” by the tightening of American immigration policy, announced earlier by President Joe Biden, urging Washington to reconsider its decisions.

President Biden, campaigning for his re-election, signed an executive order that will prevent migrants who entered the United States illegally from benefiting from the right to asylum when their number exceeds 2,500 per day, which is currently the case.

The text, which will come into force on Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. (4:01 a.m. GMT), also facilitates expulsions to Mexico, with a few rare exceptions.

“The new measures will prevent many people in need of international protection from benefiting from asylum, and they will find themselves without viable options to reach safety,” commented the UNHCR in a press release.

“Anyone who claims to have a legitimate fear of persecution in their country of origin must have access to safe territory and be able to have their claims investigated before being deported,” UNHCR wrote.

“We call on the United States to respect its international obligations and urge the government to reconsider these restrictions which undermine the fundamental right to seek asylum,” continues the UN agency, assuring its desire to support States -United in “its efforts to fundamentally reform” border controls and the asylum system.
