Less than a year after the implosion on June 18, 2023 of the Titan, this submersible from the OceanGate company which transported five people to the wreck of the Titanic in the North Atlantic, Larry Connor, an American billionaire, announced that he intented to resume explorations towards the remains of the ship which sank in 1912.
In the columns of the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, May 28, this real estate magnate from Ohio announced that he was teaming up with Patrick Lahey, director of the Triton Submarines firm, to develop this new submersible.
Named Triton 4,000/2 Abyssal Explorer for its ability to descend to 4,000 meters below sea level, the machine worth 20 million dollars will be designed to carry two people towards the abyss.
“I want to show people around the world that even though the ocean is extremely powerful, it can be wonderful, enjoyable and truly life-changing if you do it the right way,” says Larry Connor in the columns of the American media.
Scalded by the tragedy of the Titan, Connor and Lahey wish to rely on recent technological advances as well as the appearance of new materials in order to manufacture a resistant submersible.
“You couldn’t have built this submarine five years ago,” insists Connor, who wants a machine that is certified and rigorously tested before use.
However, no date has been revealed at this stage for a first trip to the wreck of the Titanic, which lies 3,800 meters below sea level.
