Sextortion: two arrests in Nigeria after the suicide of a teenager in Australia

Two people were recently arrested in Nigeria, after being suspected of having blackmailed a young Australian with sexual photos (also called sextortion) who subsequently committed suicide, the BBC reported.

The tragedy occurred at the end of 2023, in the south-east of Australia. The victim, whose identity or age has not been revealed, had sent sexual photos online, thinking he was interacting with a young woman.

Behind the screen were actually two men living in Nigeria, according to the conclusions of the investigation. These individuals threatened to send the photos to the teenager’s friends and family if he did not pay them 500 Australian dollars, a little more than 300 euros.

Thousands of cases each year

“The messages are horrible. They are aggressive and put a lot of pressure on the boy to pay,” one of the Australian police investigators, Matt Craft, told the Sydney Morning Herald. A few hours after receiving these messages, the young man committed suicide that same evening.

In collaboration with South African and Nigerian police, Australian police were able to trace the two suspects arrested in Nigeria. The BBC explains that these two individuals threatened several other teenagers.

According to the FBI, law enforcement in the United States recorded more than 7,000 cases of “sextortion” in 2022 involving young children and adolescents, and for a total of 3,000 victims. Most cases involve boys, more than a dozen of whom have committed suicide, the FBI points out.
