More than 100 people died and several others remain missing, after their boat capsized in the northern coast of Mozambique, President Felipe Nyusi said on Monday.
Lourenco Machado, an official from the country’s Maritime Transport Institute (INTRASMAR) said the vessel carrying 130 passengers was an overloaded fishing boat and was not licensed to transport people.
The victims were reportedly fleeing a cholera outbreak that wreaks havoc in the country.
Ten people have been rescued as twenty others are still missing, reports said.
President Nyusi said he was saddened by the tragedy and directed the transport minister to visit the island for investigation.
A meeting is scheduled for today to discuss the situation and take necessary measures.
