Legislative and regional elections in Togo will no longer be held on April 20 as the government has postponed this double ballot to a later date, indicates a press release.
The Togolese must still wait to vote for their next deputies and governors. The country’s authorities postponed the date of the elections, after a meeting between the office of the National Assembly and President Faure Gnassingbé.
“The President of the Republic, attentive to the interest shown by the populations in this important reform and in a spirit of openness and constructive dialogue, encouraged the deputies to remain attentive to all stakeholders concerned with a view to taking into account all the conclusions,” the press release said.
The document reveals that in response to the request of the Head of State, the office of the National Assembly wished to have a few days to engage in broad consultations with all stakeholders in national life.
“As a result, the government will carry out a slight rearrangement of the calendar of the regional and legislative elections initially scheduled for April 20, 2024,” the press release concluded.
However, the note does not give details on the new date for the holding of these elections, the campaign of which should start this Thursday, April 4.
This is the second time that the government has postponed these elections initially scheduled for April 13.
