Thailand close to legalize same-sex marriage

It’s not yet final, but Thailand is now moving closer to legalizing same-sex marriage. A step was indeed taken on Wednesday, with a vote by deputies, in favor by a large majority.

This strong position taken by parliamentarians marks an important step forward, but we will still have to wait for the text to pass through the Senate, an essential prerequisite before definitive promulgation of the law by King Maha Vajiralongkorn.

According to observers, the procedure could take several more weeks, even months.

In this region as elsewhere in Asia, homosexual unions are very rarely recognized by States. So far, only Nepal and Taiwan have passed laws that recognize these marriages.
