Release of students kidnapped in Nigeria

In Nigeria, the army announced the release of 137 students who were victims of a mass kidnapping in the north-central part of the country.

The students were abducted on March 7 from their school in Kuriga, a small town in the north-central Nigerian state of Kaduna.

Some of the 300 victims had managed to escape.

Aged between 8 and 15, the boys and girls were found in the neighboring state of Zamfara and will be brought back to Kaduna.

The details of the operation leading to their release are not known.

Since the kidnapping of the schoolchildren, the army had launched extensive sweeps in this region of Nigeria, which is home to numerous armed gangs who carry out mass kidnappings for ransom.
