Ninety-six returning Ivorian exiles have received a cheque for around 1,500 euros each from the authorities to help them reintegrate into Ivorian society.
“The total amount allocated by the Ivorian government to 96 returning migrants, including 28 women, is over 150,000 euros (98 million CFA francs),” according to the Infomigrants website.
This is a loan repayable over two years, “to support them in their professional integration”, said the Minister for the Promotion of Youth, Professional Integration and Civic Service, Mamadou Touré.
Mamadou Touré also invited the beneficiaries to “be ambassadors for Ivory Coast in the awareness-raising campaign against irregular immigration”, and to make young people understand that there are job placement schemes for them.
In 2023, 150 people returning to Ivory Coast benefited from this same program, which that year cost a total of 143.8 million CFA francs, or around 218,000 euros, as Infomigrants points out.
In 2023, of the 157,000 migrants who landed in Italy, 16,000 were Ivorians. They were the third nationality represented, behind Guinea and Tunisia.
